The recent arrival of a good number of famous streamers to the server called Egoland has shown what the community can do when they come together. In this case, Rust has been the vehicle.
Rust is a survival sandbox game, directed by Facepunch Studios, the creators of other titles such as Garry’s Mod. It’s based on games with similar characteristics. It has been around since 2018, but its success is relatively recent.
The playability is a bit peculiar, especially compared to games like Minecraft, which it shares some premises with. In addition to starvation, there are other challenges you may face here like being too cold and getting radiation poisoning, among others.
Plus, you can easily see your progress in the game by the resources you get. You’ll go from having a rock and a torch to being able to build elaborate things, like snipers and C4.
As we’ve said before, Rust has been open to all since 2018, but the game was around before that, with early access from late 2013.
However, only a few big streamers have decided to give this new virtual world a chance. Some of them got a great response from their audience, but other big figures didn’t get much of a following. Now all that has changed.
This past year and a half we’ve been living in a distorted world. The importance of platforms like Twitch and YouTube was already massive, but with the lockdowns, the number of people creating content has skyrocketed.
Some heavyweights like TheWillyrex, ElRubius and Auronplay, among others, had already joined in previously with similar games, such as Minecraft. That server, known as Karmaland, was one of the first big movements of the masses.
And ElRubius was one of the creators or promoters of this new Rust server. Egoland has most of the big streamers in the Spanish-speaking world, for the pleasure and enjoyment of all the fans who want to consume hours and hours of free content.
This sudden jump in Rust’s popularity among players who knew little or nothing about this game packed with possibilities is nothing new. But it has had a unique aspect in the huge number of content creators joining forces.
Over the same period of time, games like Among Us and the Fall Guys are just a few that have had the chance to get advertising from influential figures like Ibai, TheGrefg and Auronplay, among others, with the corresponding jump in sales.
These games, alongside Rust and Minecraft, are great examples that a game doesn’t have to have an amazing story, background or design to become famous. In fact, survival games are known for the wide world of possibilities they offer.
The social phenomenon has catapulted somewhat more discreet games to the top of the sales chart.
And they’ve made the most of this. Creating servers with influencers and breaking into groups within the server has opened up loads of possibilities, from guerrillas to alliances.
In fact, this hasn’t been the case yet with the Rust server, where only one big event has been held with Roman-style battles, but the option to do big things like we’ve seen with Minecraft and GTA V is on the table.
A new path for the world of video games that hasn’t been properly explored yet, but which promises to change how we consume content associated with this industry.
