Although Infinity Ward tried to reinvent the saga, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare wasn’t very well received by the community when it was launched.
However, that all changed a few months later with Warzone, the game’s battle royale mode. It fit the new CoD like a glove, becoming a benchmark for this genre on the market.
Even though it can be complicated to start a new game, we have a basic guide to help you master Warzone and the map of Verdansk from your very first landing.
The premise is the same as with other battle royale games: you need to get supplies and avoid the gas that edges in on the map as long as you’re alive. You can win without using a single bullet, but it’s not that easy in Warzone.
This battle royale has a series of unique mechanics that set it apart and add an extra layer of difficulty. One of the most important is the Gulag.
The Gulag, which is an alternative map you are sent to when you are killed in combat, gives you a second chance if things don’t go to plan in the first looting phase.
You’ll lose everything you had, but can return to the action if you win in one-to-one combat against another fallen player in a very small map with a pre-set weapon.
This mechanism simplifies the first decision of the match: the landing. At a certain point in the game, the Gulag is disabled, so you can go hard out the gates and trust in your ability on the second chance.
This way, you can choose to take risks to get a bit more money, which is a key element of any Warzone match.
You can use it to buy your favourite weapons or the franchise’s emblematic killstreaks. You could even revive your squadmates... if you have enough money.
The best thing is to get your hands on a UAV and try to have a self-revive kit and gas mask on hand. As long as you have as many shields as possible.
Getting all these supplies won’t be easy. To help, you can complete one of the contracts you’ll find scattered around the map. Depending on the difficulty and risk level, you’ll get more or less money from these contracts.
The goal is, then, to use the very beginning of the match to get everything you need to make sure you’re solvent to tackle the rest of the battle.
However, once you have it, then comes the hard part: trying to outlast the players left in the match to take the victory.
The decisions will be more complicated, but the safest way to win is to stay on the outer edge of the circle. Meaning to stay as close as possible to the gas. In these final moments, it is important to avoid vehicles.
As you advance, try to do so in narrow areas, as the enemies will have fewer flanks to attack you on and you’ll always have your back covered.
Even though there is a single-player mode, it’s much more common to play with two or three squadmates. It’s important to take this into account when attacking and to avoid being caught off guard. If you’re playing with friends, it’s best to move together, but with enough distance between you so you can’t all be taken out at once.
In the final circles, take into account the terrain and shelters. It’s highly likely that you’ll take fire and gaining an elevated position will be key to winning. Plus, don’t be afraid to play aggressively if you take a player down and have the numerical advantage.
Use explosives properly, combining them with other weapons, and don’t be afraid to get creative. Although Warzone isn’t easy, with a bit of experience you’ll come to master Verdansk.
